History
Treasure Cay was the brainchild of Leonard Thompson, the namesake of the Leonard Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, who gazed upon the now world famous powder white sands of the internationally renowned beach while flying over the area and decided it would be the perfect place for a resort. He obtained a lease for the land from the government and proceeded to construct a hotel, marina, restaurants, and a Dick Wilson designed golf course, in addition to the other infrastructure necessary for the project. The resort opened, significantly expanded over the decades, and is now awaiting redeveopment by GreenPointe Holdings in the near future.
Things To Do
While the world renowned powder white sands of Treasure Cay beach are the main attraction, there are many other potential activities. Excellent fishing and diving spots are a short boat ride away, excursions to feed swimming pigs, stingrays, turtles etc. are available, the Green Turtle Cay ferry dock is a short drive away for an excursion, the golf course will hopefully return to operational status once redevelopment commences, and if nothing else suits your taste drinks at the local bars while soaking in the sun are available.
Dining
Treasure Cay has a several dining options within the community. Cafe la Florence is renowned for it’s Cinnamon Rolls. Two restaurants are accessible at the Bahama Beach Club, with several themed dinner nights. Treasure Sands and Sunset Pizza are located near the main entrance. Coop’s is very popular hangout located a short ways south on Great Abaco Highway. Creative Hands serves a variety of baked goods and local dishes.
Accessibility
Most flights to Abaco are routed through Leonard Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, although it is possible to charter directly into Treasure Cay. Golf cart rentals are available locally via Cash’s Carts, and car rentals obtained through Triple J Rentals. A gas station servicing both cars and boats is located at the entrance to the harbour, with another nearby on S.C. Bootle highway.
